As a lifelong ecologist, concerned about endangered species and wilderness and the effect on them of air and water pollution, my research investigations include sustainable agriculture, safe chemical use, fossil energy use, renewable energy alternatives, water and soil conservation, and management of invasive species. I've written 560 scientific publications, including 23 edited books. I developed and teach an Environmental Policy course.
Our precious natural environment, including the very resources that sustain life, is under growing pressure from human activities spreading throughout Earth's terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. While sound science is necessary to preserving a healthy biosphere, social and political implementation is essential. Sadly, Americans have not elected a really good environmental President since Jimmy Carter nearly 30 years ago.
Our Club is losing the national political battle- we need more effective leaders at the national level. Since Carter's election, the USA has grown by 80 million persons and this growth is accelerating rather than diminishing. Concurrently, our agricultural land, natural areas, biodiversity, and water and energy resources are under increasing pressure. We must courageously address America's surging environmental problems and thereby equitably manage our resources for all generations.
With your vote I will contribute my lifetime of accumulated scientific knowledge to the Board and to the Club's knowledgeable, progressive, energetic, and caring activists.
