Elect Dick Lamm to the Sierra Club
Board of Directors
Dick Lamm
Residence: Denver, Colorado
Occupation: Professor of Public Policy, University of Denver
Governor of Colorado (Democrat) 1975-1987; organized college NAACP; Colorado Anti-Discrimination Commission; Humanitarian of the Year 1992; Board member, Conservation Foundation; President, First National Conference on Population and Environment; first Chairman, Colorado Mountain Club Conservation Committee; Christian Science Monitor Peace 2020 award.
I first joined the Sierra Club in the early 1960s inspired by Dave Brower who offered me a job following law school. We testified together before Congress against damming the Grand Canyon, and remained friends until his death.
Eight years in Colorado's Legislature, four in Leadership. Chief Sponsor of the nation's first liberalized abortion law. Led the fight to reject the 1976 Olympics in Colorado on environmental grounds. Won numerous Conservation and Leadership Awards. An avid hiker and climber, I walked 888 miles across Colorado campaigning for Governor, supported by Robert Redford and virtually the entire environmental community. As Legislator and 3 term Governor, I led fights for billboard control, tough recycling, air and water pollution laws, land use planning, wilderness legislation.
Now our future is at stake, as America is led by an environmentally disastrous President and Congress. Grassroots Club activists have gained some magnificent local environmental triumphs, but nationally our great country slides downhill. The Club's current approaches are not working. Dave Brower said, "The Board has been fiddling while the Earth burns." We need new, innovative leaders who can get things done.
My priorities are wilderness and biodiversity loss caused by habitat destruction and resource extraction--overpopulation and overconsumption are critical root causes. Our country's population is exploding, 44 million added since 1990 alone, driven by rising fertility and record immigration. The Club's population programs--global and domestic--must be strengthened.
As a public policy professor, former Governor and frequent media commentator, I'll devote my political and policy expertise and media access to advance all our campaigns. I'll work to defeat the Bush administration's environmental assault. Please give me this opportunity to serve the Club and the environment.
